Is Gonorrhea Curable?

is gonorrhea curable

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection that affects both men and women. It is transferred through anal, oral, or vaginal sex and is highly contagious. Not only can infect the sexual organs and genitals, but it can also infect the mouth, eyes, and throat of someone that comes in contact with infected sexual fluids. Knowing what causes gonorrhea is the first step in preventing infection. However, if caught by a healthcare professional, doctor, or myLAB Box™, it is curable and treatable through a series of antibiotic and probiotic medicines. Oral gonorrhea and genital gonorrhea are treated with the same antibiotics because of their similarities in infection.

Is Gonorrhea Curable?

Even though gonorrhea is entirely curable, repeat infections are a major risk associated with the STI. About three months after initial treatment, you should get tested again to make sure that your body has adjusted to treatment and effectively fought off the infection. If you are unsure whether or not your sexual partner has been treated, or even tested for that matter, you should absolutely stay on top of making sure that the gonorrhea infection doesn’t return to impact the health and stability of your body. The best way to ensure that the infection doesn’t return is by completing any assigned medicines and preventing re-exposure to gonorrhea through infected partners.

Why it is important to get tested for Gonorrhea

As noted above, gonorrhea is a treatable infection that with the proper medication can dissipate within a week or two. However, since some of the gonorrhea symptoms are subtle and not entirely distinguishable from common ailments, such as sore throat, swollen glands or conjunctivitis, some people may go quite some time without getting tested and receiving medication. This is very dangerous as the infection can spread to others through sexual contact and intercourse. When it comes to STIs and STDs, you put not only yourself at risk, but your sexual partner/s at risk as well. If diagnosed, be open with anyone that may have contracted the infection as well.

If left untreated, gonorrhea can do horrible damage to your body and cause very painful side effects. For women, the infection can spread to your uterus and fallopian tubes and damage your entire reproductive system. The fallopian tubes control and transports fertilized eggs during and before pregnancy. Not only that, untreated gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and cause permanent damage that results in pain, infertility, miscarriages, and ectopic pregnancies. For men, untreated gonorrhea can lead to infertility, fevers, pain, discolored discharge, epididymitis (infection of the testicle), proctitis, and prostate gland infections. Regardless of your sex, untreated gonorrhea can lead to very serious problems, infertility being amongst the most problematic.

At myLAB Box™ we supply you with a testing kit that is personal and discrete so you can test confidently and quickly. Prevention is the best way to avoid getting infected. We understand that testing for STDs and STIs can be embarrassing. Nobody wants to admit that they’ve contracted an STD or STI.
