WHAT IS HEPATITIS C (HEP C):

Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus and can be transmitted by sharing needles or other injection equipment as well as through sex. For some, hepatitis C is a short-term illness but for 70%–85% of people who become infected, Hepatitis C can becomes a long-term, chronic infection and cause many complications, even death.

WHY SHOULD I TEST FOR HEPATITIS C (HEP C):

Chronic Hepatitis C is a serious disease. It can result in long-term health problems, even death. The majority of infected persons may not be aware of their infection because they are not clinically ill. There is no vaccine for Hepatitis C.

HEPATITIS C FAQ:

What is Hepatitis C?
Hepatitis C is a disease of the liver. A viral infection causes inflammation of the liver. The virus responsible for this condition is called the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).

How do you contract Hep C?
Hepatitis C is a contagious disease. A person having contact with the body fluids of infected persons could contact this disease. It is important to note that the virus is present in the blood alone. Therefore it can be contracted by sharing injections and needles.

One can also contract Hep C by having sexual intercourse with an affected person during the menstruation period. Extra-genital forms of penetration such as anal intercourse can also transmit the virus. Saliva does not carry the virus, hence, it is unlikely to contract Hep C via kissing or oral sex.

Tattooing and body piercing can also transmit the virus if unsterilized needles are used.

What are the symptoms of Hepatitis C?
Symptoms can occur between two to 26 weeks after the infection. They can be classified into three stages:

Normal Hepatitis C:

You may experience fatigue, muscle aches, and tenderness in the abdomen. Your bowel movements would be light in color. Your eyes and skin may acquire a yellowish tinge with your urine displaying a dark yellow color.

Acute Hepatitis C:

In addition to the above symptoms, you may experience nausea and low-grade fever along with chills. You may also suffer from loss of appetite and have mood swings. Many people have reported itching of the skin as well. There can be an accumulation of fluid at the feet. There have been cases of people vomiting blood.

Chronic Hepatitis:

The symptoms would be the same as in the Acute Hepatitis C, although some people go for years without displaying any symptoms. The medical community refers to this condition as dormant or latent Hepatitis C. This disease can suddenly manifest with liver inflammation and scarring. Complications may include acquiring liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and ultimately death.

Is there a cure for Hep C?

The latest antiviral drugs can cure Hepatitis C. Some of the more common drugs in use are Simeprevir, Ledipasvir, and Dasabuvir.

Are there any side effects to these medicines?
The side effects of some of the more common Hep C drugs may include but are not limited to: fatigue, nausea, difficulty sleeping, diarrhea, muscle spasms, and/or dizziness.
