Herpes Simplex Virus-2 (HSV-2) Signs and Symptoms
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to have Herpes without ever experiencing symptoms. Because genital herpes can be passed even when no symptoms are present and protection is properly used, it’s important to know your status, as well as that of your sexual partners.
Vaginal or pelvic infection:
- Discomfort similar to a yeast, bacterial or bladder infection
- Sores in or around the vagina, vulva or urethra
- Bleeding between periods

About HSV I & II?
It is important to seek treatment for a Herpes infection, as symptoms can become severe and very painful. The virus not only affects the genital area, but lesions or blisters may also appear on the thighs, near the anus or on the buttocks. If lesions are present on the cervix, HSV can also lead to cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix).
It is very common to have several outbreaks, especially in the first year of contracting the virus. This is particularly common with genital herpes. Although there is no cure for HSV, medications can manage symptoms and control outbreaks.
Because the sores associated with a herpes outbreak can bleed easily, having herpes can put you at increased risk of acquiring HIV. When the sores come into contact with the mouth, penis, vagina or rectum during sex, they increase the risk of spreading HIV if either you or your partner is HIV-positive.
In pregnancy, it is very important to know if you have a Herpes infection. It’s possible to pass herpes to an infant, which can be fatal (neonatal herpes).
